Cuatro etapas se han escrito en Ia historia del Instituto Militar Aeronáutico desde su creación en la decada de los 50.
La primera desde 1951, cuando se realizó el primer curso de ascenso, de teniente a capitan, en las instalaciones del Comando de la Fuerza Aerea, dependiendo del Estado Mayor y posteriormente en las instalaciones de Techo, al sur occidente de Bogota.
